What’s in a Future…
Do you know what your 5 and 10 year goals are? How could you ever succeed in life if you don’t have it all planned out. I remember when I joined the Marine Corp; there was no plan. I walked into there office, listened to what they had to say, liked what they had to offer and I signed on the dotted line. They planned the next four years of my life for me.
If you are working your way through college, I’m sure you get asked this question all the time; “what is your major?” How do you respond? You have your entire life ahead of you. There are so many difficult decisions that you are making and decision that you will make. Does it feel like one little slip up and it all falls apart, like a house of cards? Do you ever just want people to leave you alone? You may not have it all figured out yet. But you may. It is probably scarier if you think you do.
We say it all of the time! “I want a job that will pay the most for the least amount of work.” Or, “I would like to get paid and not have to work.” Our choice of occupation is typically based on those types of statements. It revolves around income. We create plans that will help us accomplish that goal. Nothing wrong with plans, plans are good. Except for when we don’t have all of the information or we do it without accepting the Wisdom that has been offered to us. If things go awry we tend to settle for whatever comes along. Good plan: bad job. We don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow. This past year has proven that to us, the economy can take flight at any time.
James recognized this. A couple of thousands years ago James passed on wisdom to live by;
James 4:13-17
13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will[g] go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; 14whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” 16 But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.
17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.
The wisdom that has been offered to us is what comes from God. James is encouraging us to include God in our decisions and plans. Don’t give up on your dreams. As you grow closer to God your dreams will become clearer.
